Create a family plan
Make sure all the members of your family know the following:
- Your immigration lawyer's phone number.
- The location of important documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports, and immigration documents.
- Your immigration number ("A" number), if you have one.
- How to reach each other in case of an emergency.
Make arrangements for someone (a trusted friend, an extended family member, etc.) to take care of your children and/or elderly relatives in the case that you are detained. Make sure that your children's school knows that he or she has permission to pick them up and always have his or her phone number with you.
Prepare a signed and notarized Power of Attorney that gives a trusted friend or family member the right to make legal decisions for you in case you are detained (such as caring for your children, selling your assets if you are deported, etc.).
Make sure that you have enough cash stored away to pay for a bond in case you are arrested (usually $3,000-$5,000).
Do not carry papers with you from another country.
If police or immigration officers come to your home:
- They must have a warrant in order to search your home.
- Do not open the door, because this might be understood as giving permission to enter your home.
- Ask them to slip the warrant under the door.
- If you've seen a warrant that lists your home on it, you must let them in to conduct their search. Ask for receipts for everything they remove from your home.
If police or immigration officers come to your workplace:
Do not run!
Do not answer any questions. Don't say anything at all, or just say "I need to speak to my lawyer." (In some states you must give your name, if asked.In those states you can be arrested for refusing to give your name. However, if your name is incriminating, it may be a better idea to risk arrest by refusing to speak than to tell the officers your name.)
If you are arrested:
You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer any questions (except your name). Don't say anything or just say, "I need to speak to my lawyer."
Do not lie.
Do not give false documents.
Do not sign any documents before speaking with a lawyer.
You have the right to make a telephone call. Call your lawyer or a family member who can contact your lawyer, or your consulate.
Ask for a bond.

No mienta
No entregue documentos falsos.
No firme ningun documento antes de hablar con su abogado.
Usted tiene el derecho de hacer una llamada telefónica.Llame a su abogado, un miembro de familia que pueda contactarse con su abogado, o a su Consulado.
Pida una fianza.
